Short Review: Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)

★½

Overstuffed yet unfocused. Convoluted yet shallow. Extravagant yet dull. “Wonder Woman 1984” is a clunky script made even worse by contrived geopolitical and family drama, shoehorned backstory (during the climax of all times!), shoddy special effects, disappointing lead performances, straight up distracting directing and editing, recycled themes (she already gave up Trevor 60 years ago!), and an entire character whom the movie had seemingly no idea what to do with despite her being central to the legacy of the movie’s namesake.

The only redeeming moments are the beautiful opening flashback sequence (and the delightful surprise appearance by Robin Wright), the tender moment between Steve and Diana during the fireworks, and the two scenes in which Diana masters the ability of flight, both of which put a huge grin on my face. Otherwise, this is a sad step down from its thoughtful predecessor.
